Canoes and kayaks

In North-East Germany, barely two hours away from Berlin and Hamburg by car, there is what is probably the biggest and finest inland canoeing region in Germany: The Mecklenburg Lake District. This unique landscape was formed by the last ice age and with its countless wood-fringed waterways it is a paradise for canoe and kayak trekkers. The Mueritz National Park and several nature parks are an open invitation to enjoy nature far away from the stress and hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The waters of the Mecklenburg Lake District are, with a very few exceptions, not running waters, so that neither currents nor weirs mar the pleasure of canoeing. So even canoe novices are in a position to master day-treks of 15 kilometres and enjoy the ever-changing landscape. Along the water-trekking routes you will find numerous campsites and supply and service points.

Those who do not bring their own boat with them can decide on the spot to hire the boat of their choice from the many canoe hire businesses and thus add further variety to their holiday. Little harbour towns and cosy villages tempt the water trekkers to go on land to explore historic old town centres, idyllic harbours or the many local history museums with interesting information about the natural world and people and places.
