Schwerin, the Capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
A glance at the map of Schwerin or even better the view from the cathedral tower shows the capital’s very special setting: the blue of the lakes dominates the city. There is water everywhere one looks. Lakes, great and small, are an open invitation to go sailing, surfing, angling, bathing, camping or boat trekking. The symbol of the city is Schwerin Castle. It rises majestic and picturesque on an island immediately adjacent to the Mecklenburg State Theatre and the State Museum.
The streets of the Old Town are just the place for a relaxing stroll and the chance to dawdle here and there, while the numerous festivals and open-air markets present an opportunity to enjoy the entertainment and the food and drink and hunt for bargains. The Old Town Festival, The Castle Festival, the biggest dragon-boat festival in Europe and many other highlight events regularly transform Schwerin into a hive of happy activity!
